English, do you speak it?

I wasn't going to crock today. Really. Spain was going to be the last country and tonight's meal was going to be part of next week's theme. Luckily for me, tonight's meal fit into this week's theme as well.

I didn't grow up eating shepherd's pie. In fact, the first time I ate it was 2 years ago when a friend made it for us (Hi Laura!). Before today, I didn't know that shepherd's pie is also known as cottage pie. I also didn't know that it is a British meal. Or that there are a bizillion different variations of it. Or that so many different countries have different names for the same thing. Check it out on wikipedia. It's amazing.

"Cottage/Shepherd's Pie" (6 quart pot)

~1 lb ground beef, browned and drained (I actually used beef this time.)
~1 can condensed tomato soup
~1 can (15oz) kernel corn, drained
~1 can (15oz) french cut green beans, drained
~1 envelope instant mashed potatoes, prepared
~1/2 t dried basil
~2 cups grated cheddar cheese

Combine beef, soup, corn, beans, and basil in large mixing bowl.
Pour mixture into greased crock pot.
Spread mashed potatoes on top.
Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.
The last hour of cooking, sprinkle cheese on top of potatoes.

6 servings.
I can't figure out why my mom never made this for us. It's ridiculously easy. It contains ingredients she used to make other things I grew up eating. I said my childhood was very meat and potatoes, right? AND it's delicious.

Next week's theme WAS going to be something along the lines of "meals other people might be surprised I didn't have as a kid", but I could think of only two meals and I'm saving the other one for a rainy day. Instead, next week's theme is "Total Request Crock" and I need your help. Is there something you'd like to see me crock? It can be anything. An entree. A side. A dessert. A beverage. Something completely random that you're not even sure can be crocked. I'm taking suggestions and as long as I can find a recipe that will (theoretically) make our taste buds happy, I'm willing to try. If I don't get enough ideas, I might have to turn on my oven and we can't have that now, can we?

  1. It only just occurred to me that I could actually post comments here. This was fantastic, and really easy! Especially for me since all I have to do is show up at home and eat :-)
